As a projects supplier, I’ve been in the thick of it, dealing with the ups and downs of figuring out how much a project is gonna cost. It’s not just about pulling numbers out of thin air; it’s a science, a bit of an art, and sometimes, a wild guess. But hey, with the right techniques, you can get pretty close to the mark. So, let’s dive into the cost estimation techniques that I’ve found useful in my projects – supplier journey. Projects

Analogous Estimation
Analogous estimation is like looking back at old projects that were similar to the one you’re working on now. It’s a quick and dirty way to get a ball – park figure. You know, if you built a similar – sized house last year, you can use the cost of that project to estimate the cost of a new one.
The cool thing about analogous estimation is that it’s fast. When a client comes to you in a hurry and wants a rough cost right away, this is your go – to method. It doesn’t require a ton of detailed information. All you need are the high – level characteristics of the project, like the size, complexity, and the general scope.
But here’s the flip side. It’s not super accurate. Every project is unique, and there are always little differences that can throw your estimate off. For example, the location of a new building might have different material costs or labor rates compared to the old project you’re using as a reference. So, while it’s great for getting an initial idea, you can’t rely on it for the final budget.
Parametric Estimation
Now, parametric estimation is a bit more high – tech. It uses statistical relationships between historical data and other variables to estimate costs. Let’s say you’re building a software application. You might know from past projects that it costs a certain amount per line of code or per user feature.
You take these parameters and plug them into a formula to get an estimate. The advantage of this method is that it’s more accurate than analogous estimation. Since it’s based on statistical data, it can account for more variables. It also allows you to adjust the estimate as you get more information about the project.
However, it has its own set of problems. You need a good amount of historical data to make it work. If you’re a new projects supplier or if you’re working on a completely new type of project, you might not have enough data to rely on. And let’s face it, collecting and analyzing that data can be a real pain in the neck.
Bottom – Up Estimation
Bottom – up estimation is like building a house from the ground up. You break down the project into its smallest components, estimate the cost of each component, and then add them all up. For a construction project, you’d estimate the cost of the foundation, the walls, the roof, and every little detail in between.
This method is the most accurate of the three. Since you’re looking at each part of the project individually, you can take into account all the unique factors that might affect the cost. It’s great for projects where accuracy is crucial, like government contracts or large – scale infrastructure projects.
But boy, is it time – consuming. Breaking down a project into tiny pieces and estimating each one can take forever. And if there are any changes to the project scope during the estimation process, you have to go back and redo a lot of the work.
Three – Point Estimation
The three – point estimation technique takes a bit of a different approach. Instead of giving a single estimate, you come up with three values: the optimistic estimate (O), the most likely estimate (M), and the pessimistic estimate (P).
The optimistic estimate is what you’d get if everything goes perfectly. The most likely estimate is based on your normal expectations, and the pessimistic estimate takes into account all the things that could go wrong. Then, you can use a formula like the PERT (Program Evaluation and Review Technique) formula: (O + 4M+P)/6 to get a weighted average estimate.
This method is great because it gives you a range of possible costs, which is more realistic than a single estimate. It also helps you think about the risks involved in the project. For example, if the pessimistic estimate is way higher than the most likely estimate, you know there are some significant risks that you need to address.
Expert Judgment
Expert judgment is all about tapping into the knowledge and experience of people who know what they’re doing. In my line of work, I often consult with architects, engineers, and other experts in the field. They’ve been around the block a few times and can give me valuable insights into the cost of a project.
The thing about expert judgment is that it can be very reliable. These experts have seen it all and can spot potential cost – drivers that you might miss. But it’s also subjective. Different experts might have different opinions, and there’s no guarantee that their estimates are accurate.
So, as a projects supplier, which technique should you use? Well, it depends on the project. For quick, rough estimates, analogous estimation might be your best bet. If you need more accuracy and have the time and data, bottom – up or parametric estimation could be better. Three – point estimation is great for managing risk, and expert judgment is always a good addition to your toolkit.
In my experience, the best approach is to use a combination of these techniques. Start with a quick analogous estimate to get an initial feel for the project’s cost. Then, as you get more information, use parametric or bottom – up estimation to refine the estimate. Use three – point estimation to account for risks, and rely on expert judgment to fill in any gaps.
