Pre – installation Preparation
- Measure the Stairs: Accurately measure each step, including the riser (the vertical part of the step) and the tread (the horizontal part). Measure the length, width, and depth of each step. It’s crucial to be as precise as possible to ensure a proper fit.
- Inspect the Stairs: Check the stairs for any damage, unevenness, or loose boards. If there are any issues, repair them before installing the flooring. Make sure the stairs are clean and free of dust, dirt, and debris.
- Acclimate the Flooring: Engineered wood flooring needs to acclimate to the environment where it will be installed. Leave the flooring in the room where the stairs are located for at least 48 – 72 hours. This allows the wood to adjust to the temperature and humidity of the space, reducing the risk of warping or shrinking after installation.
Installation Process
Step 1: Install the Underlayment
- Start by laying the underlayment on the stairs. The underlayment provides a smooth surface for the flooring and helps reduce noise and moisture. Cut the underlayment to fit each step, leaving a small gap around the edges to allow for expansion. Use a staple gun or adhesive to secure the underlayment in place.
Step 2: Install the Treads
- Begin with the bottom step. Cut the engineered wood flooring to fit the tread. Make sure to leave a small expansion gap around the edges. Apply adhesive to the underlayment using a trowel, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Place the flooring on the tread and press it firmly into the adhesive. Use a rubber mallet to ensure good contact.
- For subsequent steps, repeat the process. When cutting the flooring for the treads, be careful to match the grain pattern for a seamless look. You may need to make angled cuts at the edges to fit the shape of the step.
Step 3: Install the Risers
- Measure and cut the engineered wood flooring for the risers. Apply adhesive to the back of the flooring piece and press it onto the riser. Use a nail gun or stapler to secure the edges, making sure not to over – nail and damage the wood.
- If the riser has a curve or an irregular shape, you may need to use a jigsaw to cut the flooring to fit. Take your time to ensure a precise fit.
Step 4: Install the Stair Nosing
- Stair nosing is an important part of the installation as it provides a finished look and protects the edge of the tread. Measure and cut the stair nosing to fit the width of the tread. Apply adhesive to the back of the nosing and press it onto the edge of the tread. Use nails or staples to secure it in place.
Finishing Touches
- After all the steps are installed, sand the edges of the flooring to smooth out any rough spots. Wipe the stairs clean to remove any dust or debris.
- Apply a finish to the engineered wood flooring. This can be a clear coat, stain, or a combination of both. The finish not only enhances the appearance of the wood but also provides protection against wear and tear.
